"While Im here Im glad to ruin peoples lives with every song"
Los Angeles artist Carter Ace recently dropped his new EP “Season One” and I love it. Carter expertly balances genres of pop, r&b and rap in each track. Carter Ace treats this EP as a diary and its refreshing to hear rappers be vulnerable on their tracks about their emotions- including self doubt. Carter Ace raps “I think im made for this/ I mean I hope I'm made for this/ I mean I know I'm made for this/ I need to have more faith in this” on the first track of the EP, “Keep On”, setting the tone for the project. These introspective bars give a window into the workings of an underground and superbly talented artist such as Carter Ace, making his way through the ups and downs of the music industry.
Carter Ace is more than just a rapper though- he shows off his vocal range on “Countryside” where he interpolates the melody from Earth Wind & Fires “Thats the Way of the World” on the hook, and does it justice. Carter Ace also delivers soft and soulful vocals on “No Facade”. Carter rassures himself and his goals on the r&b/soul track “Worth It”, where he raps and sings over a bright guitar melody and layered vocal melodies. Finally, on “Waiting 4 Me”, Carter Ace shows his vocal range, hitting high notes in the hook to start off the sad ballad. In the verse, you can hear the pain coming from his throat when he raps “Im kind of fucked up right now/ can you please send me some help/ Could you show me that you give a fuck?” Carter Ace isnt afraid to wear his emotions on his sleeve through his music.
This project is very fun when it chooses to be. My favorite track “Lonely, I Can Tell” has a groovy latin guitar that gets you moving from the start. The guitar, along with fellow Los Angeles artist dylAn’s almost conversation-like delivery disarms you for the thick 808 bass that comes in about a quarter of the way through. Carter Ace is pitched up on the hook, singing about a girl who has a boyfriend. “Bro’s in the back with a tall thing/ Couldve sworn bros like 5’3”. Lines like this add to the playful element of this song, along with the emphatic beatboxing in the background. Carter Ace also has fun on the groovy track “Way Too Childish”, teasing that hes “No pedo/ I need some graduates/ Someone at least in my bracket” on the hook.
The EP also has several demos of songs already on the project, giving us an insight into his creative process. I am looking forward to Season Two.
