"Some of us took the wicked route instead of the righteous, take a snake and Ima behead him like ISIS"
Marco Plus has a gift for rhyming about complex struggles while intertwining clever bars between. The Atlanta rapper delivers unrelenting bars over soulful instrumentals from the Smokers Club. Plus kicks off the album strongly with “Papers”, letting his presence be known over lo-fi horns driven by hard hitting 808’s. Marco Plus has a delivery that reeks of confidence; hence the name of the album, Joints. On “86 Avirex Freestyle”, Plus delivers unrelenting bars throughout the chopped sample beat switch. WowGr8 of fellow Atlanta rap group “Earthgang” matches Marco Plus’s high kinetic rapping on “All Day Long”, both dropping memorable verses. Many of Marco Plus’s raps touch on the topics of overcoming the struggle and of course, smoking. The three track run from “Some Sins” to “hiiiasf!” remind me of music I would listen to while faded in the car with friends in highschool. These instrumentals give off a calming energy, while Marco Plus tops them with venom laced bars about overcoming obstacles in life; topics one might think about too much when smoking marijuana. “Gamblin Souls” foregoes drums to make space for Plus, Smoke DZA, and Chuck Strangers to craft their grimy verses. Some of my favorites off this album also include “meet Me @ Tha ritz” that has a bouncy hook. Check him out if you like Isaiah Rashad or Freddie Gibbs.
